It’s been a busy, but very pleasant couple of days for me, having been invited to the International Spirits Challenge in London where yesterday saw some of the industry’s top blenders sample and taste 99 single malts, with each one of the malts aiming for a prestigious Gold Medal. This year, saw some fantastic flavours influenced by the great woods like American White Oak and sherry.
We started the tasting at 10am and worked through until 4pm, blind tasting every sample as it came our way. It’s also a great social event, letting all the blenders get together to see what trends are coming up and what others see as the main issues. And most importantly of all, it’s a very sociable setting – good company with good drinks. Who could ask for more? Well, apart from a Gold Medal that is.
(For those wondering, 99 whiskies in one day is not an unusual amount for a blind tasting event like this. The trick is to take it slow, savour every drink, give it your full and honest attention because these malts deserve nothing less.)
