Dalmore1951Decanter-LOW-222x300On Sunday we revealed Jura Prophecy, yesterday it was Jura Fortunach and now say “hello, how are you” to Sirius. The latest new whisky from Whyte and Mackay.

1951 was an incredible year. And while men dreamed of reaching the stars, guided by the brightest of them all, Sirius, it would be another 18 years before that journey took place. But for a whisky in the Dalmore distillery, 1951 saw it it begin on a journey that wouldn’t end until 2009.*

To me, this is one small step for a dram, but one giant leap for dramkind to continue the space theme (and I’ll come back to that later in the week). Coming from the oldest barrel left in the Dalmore distillery, Sirius is distinguished and elegant, age has gracefully finessed this brilliant expression. Aromas of intense citrus and honeyed chocolate are quickly joined by roasted coffee, crushed walnuts and hints of liquorice spice.

Let the spirit gently roll over the palate, holding it long in the mouth to tease out its illuminating flavours. First coffee and bitter chocolate, followed by crushed almonds and ripe apple, then toffee, spicy cinnamon and toasted oak provide the perfect finish.”

It’s a very limited release whisky as the Financial Times points out in an article. John Hansell’s written a little bit about Sirius on his whisky blog and I look forward to hearing his thoughts on it.

(But is this the most dramatic news coming from Whyte and Mackay this week? Well, no. That would be coming tomorrow on October 7. But I’m not done talking about the whisky today either…)

* Yes, I know that technically The Sun is the brightest star in the sky. So it’s apart from that one – or the brightest one in the night sky. Here’s a list of the brightest stars in the sky. And if you go out to spot them, wrap up and take a dram with you, it’s cold out there.

* And yes, I also know that Sirius is a double star. Whyte and Mackay is all about the doubles – double name, double marriage system for the whisky, double lions on the bottles. I even have double blogs. You think we don’t plan these things?
