Whisky fun at #EdTwestival tonight

I can’t be there due to the US trip but there’s Twestivals in Glasgow and Edinburgh (as well as many other places) tonight and they look set to be a lot of fun while also raising funds for Concern Worldwide. And if you’re at the Edinburgh one, there’s also an added whisky element to the fun…

Not only are the lads from Edinburgh Whisky carrying out tastings all night long (every half hour from 8.30pm until 10.30pm) but Whyte & Mackay are donating a bottle of the award-winning 30 year old whisky (tasting notes video below) and there’s a few bottles of Drambuie up for grabs as well.

It’s all for a good cause and should be a great night, I’ll definitely be raising a glass and going SLAINTE to this one from America at some point today.

Winner! High Praise for Whyte & Mackay 40 year old

At the recent World Whisky Awards, held by Whisky Magazine, the Whyte & Mackay 40 year old (links to buy it here) was awarded Best Scotch Blended Whisky and Best Scotch Blended 21 Year Old and Over.

On the back of the two award wins by the Whyte and Mackay 30 year old - Best Blended Whisky at the International Spirit’s Challenge and the William Grant Independence Trophy for Best Blended Scotch Whisky – last year, it’s a great time for these beautiful whiskies (and I’m sure the bloggers who tried them at the blogger meet-up agree too).

Anyway, let’s talk a little more about the 40 year old and reveal a few secrets about the contents…

Diwali Whisky Podcast now available

Hi folks, Craig here with a couple of links to whisky Diwali podcasts. The previous links have been for decent-sized files (and have been spoken about on the previous Diwali Whisky post) but this one comes in at 15 minutes and is a bit long for Richard’s YouTube whisky channel.

The direct link for the long Diwali whisky podcast is here and click on the next link for the whisky podcasts link in general. We’ll be fixing the iTunes link over the weekend (I would have done it last night but there was a gathering at Richard’s suite last night)

Diwali and Whisky – and the Master Blender hitting your TV screen this weekend

Get the Indian nibbles in, pour a large Whyte and Mackay whisky, and get ready for a TV show all about Diwali and whisky. It’s just been confirmed to me the times for the show Nibbles and Whisky.

The show – a longer version of the videos you’ll have seen in the previous Diwali whisky post featuring myself and Cinnamon Club’s Vivek Singh – will go on air at 6.30pm on digital channel Bollywood For U Music (B4U) on the night of Diwali, October 17. It will also run on Sunday at the same time and on October 24/25 be on B4U Music, Channel 781 on Sky Digital.

How to celebrate Diwali with whisky

I mentioned earlier that I had been filming down in London for suggested whisky which goes with the festival of light, Diwali. Well, that filming’s now online, so get your taste buds ready…

For those of you who are at work at can’t watch (go slap your boss!) here’s what we went with (and it was a great night – but don’t just take my word for it. Whisky for Everyone came along and blogged about the curry and whisky fun):

Chicken tikka and Whyte & Mackay 22 years old as the smoky, charred flavours that the chicken had picked up from the tandoor oven were complimented well by the sweet and spicy palate of the whisky.
Beetroot mini fritters and an onion salad were paired with the younger Whyte & Mackay 13 years old. The whisky’s softness and sweetness balances out the spice in the fritters.
For the ladoo (a sweet chickpea ball) and kulfi (a frozen reduced buffalo milk dessert covered in crushed pistachio nuts) – were combined with the Whyte & Mackay 30 years old blended whisky.

Other dishes that work include:

Cured organic salmon with orange and mint salad, Bombay spiced vegetables with cumin pao was served with the Whyte & Mackay Special Blend whisky.
Pan seared breast of chicken with smoked buffalo cheese and korma sauce.Stir fry of paneer with baby corn and Kadhai spice with Jura Superstition.
Spiced mango brulee to accompany the rare Jura 1974.
Dalmore 40 years old and coffee with handmade bitter chocolates.
